Practicum
A twelve-week practicum will provide students with supervised field experience in community health agencies in order to integrate course work and further the development of skills in community health practice. The practicum experience will be defined through a learning contract developed with the field supervisor and approved by the Practicum Director. At the conclusion of the practicum experience, students will submit a final report that will be of relevance to the practicum agency. Practicum activities will vary between settings but will include active participation in agency programs, attendance at meetings, presentation of the practicum project to the agency and submission of a final report to be approved by the field supervisor. Students will receive an interim and final evaluation from their field supervisor.
Practica will take place in Canada or, with permission of the Practicum Director, in international locations. Appropriate settings include public health units in Regional Health Authorities in BC and in other provinces, provincial government branches such as the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Labour (e.g. Worksafe BC), or their equivalent in other provinces, federal agencies such as the Public Health Agency of Canada, the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Health Canada, or public health research settings, such as the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, the BC Centre for Disease Control, the Occupational Health and Safety Agency for Healthcare in BC, and the BC Cancer Agency. Our practicum format and content are fully compliant with current Canadian guidelines established by the Public Health Agency of Canada.
